Review

"Music lovers and historians will widen their trivia repertoire with this book and its discography, and they'll appreciate the tribute paid to those who rocked country-style before it was cool."

Annotation

John Einarson's meticulously researched investigation into the roots of country rock pulls the numerous strands of its complex story into a coherent pattern. He unearths many musicians and bands, both major and minor, who were drawn to country music for a variety of reasons--some by a wish to return to simpler, less politically fraught times, some by a desire to rediscover their roots. While these pioneers drew a small yet enthusiastic following, their music remained beyond the boundaries of what was then deemed commercial until the early-1970s advent of the Eagles, an outfit whose popular radio-friendly harmonies and unthreatening rhythms were to radically alter the shape of both country music and rock. In DESPERADOS, Einarson delves into the roots of the country-rock cross-pollination, with authoritative commentary from such luminaries as the Monkees' Michael Nesmith, whose little-known First National Band solo project is a seminal album in the genre, the great rockabilly guitarist Carl Perkins, and Byrds founding member Chris Hillman. His resulting history is a revealing account of the development of a constantly evolving musical form that remains vital to this day.

Short Desription

Country rock was born in Southern California in the summer of 1972, a mellow sound with tight bluegrass harmonies and country instrumentation which would influence the rock scene for years to come. Einarson is a noted music historian.
