Review

Magnet (6-7/00, p.75) - "...A warm, rumbling mass of guitars and gently loping percussion....it sounds beautiful....The results are what blow minds..."
The Wire (3/00, p.58) - "...A self-referential world of wigged out space rock and sloppy atmospherics..."
CMJ (11/8/99, p.21) - "...the outfit's best and beefiest outing yet...a stellar and thought-provoking work."
NME (1/15/00, p.27) - 6 out of 10 - "...after 2 years of feeding guitars through computers [this] is the strangely tedious result. Embracing prog to an alarming degree, it still has moments of inspired oddity....clever..."

Product note

Doldrums: Justin Chearno, Bill Kellum, Matt Kellum.
Engineers include: Sean Halleck.
Recorded between 1997 & 1999.
Doldrums occur in equatorial regions where the water is at a dead calm. Musically, it's what happens when a computer meets a mixing board and silicon meets cathode. Almost the opposite from the origin of the word, loops and samples churn in digital currents, at times droney, at others filled with liquid movement. Traditional instruments are almost unrecognizable throughout most of this recording, processed and fed through mathematical equations to disfigurement. Vocals are kept at bay while stray rhythms encourage improvisation.
Other melodic improvs occur, building more traditional songs structures, such as the Brit-pop influenced "Free Festival of the Stonebridge." This song is invaded by piercing, high-pitched feedback noise and free jazz trumpet samples, making it both a trial and delight to hear. Humor injected into this release continues on a haunting digital journey with songs like the static-filled "Who Shot J.R.." DESK TRICKERY is an impressive second album for trio Matt Kellum (drums), Bill Kellum (guitar/vocals) and Justin Chearno (guitar); it was recorded in New York City and at a festival in Denton, TX.
