Album Description

In salsa and Afro-Cuban music, the word "descarga" refers to a jam -- a descarga is the most spontaneous and improvisatory part of Afro-Cuban music. It's no coincidence that salseros who love descargas tend to be big supporters of Latin jazz; obvious examples include percussionist Ray Barretto (who celebrated the spirit of the descarga with his 1966 smash "Descarga Criolla"), Mongo Santamaria, and the late Tito Puente. You could say that Latin jazz is one big descarga, and a descarga mentality certainly prevails on Julio Padron's Latin jazz effort Descarga Santa. The Cuban trumpeter has played vocal-oriented Afro-Cuban music with Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Pi¤ero as well as instrumental Latin jazz with Irakere; on this CD (his first album as a leader), he expresses his need to improvise by making the latter his main focus. Although vocalist Moraima Marin is featured on the salsa romantica number "Capullitos de Adel¡," instrumental Latin jazz is dominant. Most of the time, Padron and his band los Amigos de Santa Amalia favor a conventional blend of hard bop and Afro-Cuban rhythms -- nothing innovative or groundbreaking, but spirited and swinging. Comparisons to Arturo Sandoval are inevitable, both played with Irakere, and both were influenced by Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown. Nonetheless, Padron is his own man, and he brings plenty of enthusiasm to this enjoyable, if derivative, debut. ~ Alex Henderson
