When 2005's DELICIOUS SURPRISE was released, many contemporary female country singers were unveiling traditional-sounding discs hearkening back to Nashville's 1960s and '70s glory days. Never one to follow the trends, Jo Dee Messina stayed the modern country course, delivering an album packed with one bouncy, sassy, pop-country gem after another.

Seemingly taking cues more from "9 to 5" era-Dolly Parton than Tammy Wynette and Lynn Anderson, the Massachusetts-born performer sings tunes that are undeniably sexy and fiercely feminine. "Someone Else's Life" is driven by funky drums that would sound right at home on a Maroon 5 album, while the title track details an average girl's wild dreams over a rocked-out, John Mellencamp-like arrangement. "My Give a Damn's Busted" is classic Jo Dee--a swampy, hip-grinding beat matched with slippery fiddles, twangy guitar, and wry, in-your-face lyrics. Like the many wacky photos that adorn its package, DELICIOUS SURPRISE is a fun, rollicking, unapologetically saucy, and undeniably substantial view from country's poppiest frontier.
