The Del McCoury Band Artist Snapshot:

Singer/guitarist Del McCoury has managed to take an old-school approach to bluegrass and give it a vitality and contemporary relevance few of his peers can match. He got his start playing with Bill Monroe in the early '60s, but by the end of the decade he began leading his own band. By the '90s, McCoury (whose band by that time included his sons Rob and Ronnie) crossed over to find favor with rock audiences while never wavering from his roots-conscious approach.

Del McCoury Artist Snapshot:

Singer/mandolinist Del McCoury's career had the most auspicious beginning a bluegrass musician can hope for; in the mid-1960s he was a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. He kicked off his solo career a couple of years later, and by the '70s he had found a middle ground between bluegrass traditionalism and the open-minded "newgrass" approach, becoming a highly influential artist in the process. In the '80s, McCoury truly codified his style, forming a tight band that included his sons Ronnie and Rob. THE MOUNTAIN, their 1999 collaboration with Steve Earle, raised the band's profile even further, endearing them to non-country audiences and neatly dovetailing with the early-2000s O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?-inspired bluegrass resurgence.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (7/27/01, p.71) - "...One of bluegrass' premier practioners...applying their masterful picking, singing, and arranging skills to a repertoire ranging from Frank Sinatra to Richard Thompson. Hair-raising." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Del McCoury Band: Del McCoury (vocals, guitar); Ronnie McCoury (vocals, mandolin); Jason Carter (vocals, fiddle); Mike Bub (vocals, bass); Rob McCoury (guitar, banjo).

Additional personnel includes: Ricky Skaggs (vocals); Stuart Duncan (fiddle).

He's been churning out top-shelf bluegrass albums since the late 1960s, and as of 2001(the release date of this stellar album) Del McCoury wasn't showing any signs of slowing down. DEL AND THE BOYS is as focused and beautifully executed a set as the guitarist-vocalist has ever put down, and the work of his wicked sidemen (who toss off complex harmonies and tasty instrumental licks as though shrugging their shoulders) doesn't hurt either.

A certain amount of credit should be given for the fine selection of songs, some of which are McCoury originals, some of which are covers (the fine version of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" is a standout), and all of which fit the group perfectly. The high lonesome sound is in full effect here, with four-part harmonies that recall Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, and there's also a lovely combination of both musical sophistication and gritty authenticity that makes this an immediate and timeless late-era bluegrass gem.
