Colombian pop star Carlos Vives combines the traditional acoustic sounds of cumbia and vallenato (including heavy reliance on accordion and flute) with contemporary pop and rock sounds. Though he gained fame as a soap-opera actor, he's earned a significant amount of credibility for his music. He broke out in a major way in the 1990s, garnering kudos and Grammys along the way, and has proved influential to a host of early-2000's Rock en Espanol groups (Juanes, Cabas, et al).
