Brand New Artist Snapshot:

Long Island-bred Brand New matched driving pop-punk/emo sounds with witty lyricism on their 2001 debut album, YOUR FAVORITE WEAPON, and in due course, they'd earned a big enough following to land the follow-up a home on a major label. DEJA ENTENDU showed the band growing by leaps and bounds, greatly expanding their sound and their production aesthetic. Their third album, THE DEVIL AND GOD ARE RAGING INSIDE ME, continued the progression, mining a darker vein and sporting more sophisticated songcraft.

Review

Rolling Stone (12/25/03, p.104) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2003" - "...DEJA ENTENDU brings an uncommon artistry and bitter tongue to emo anthems..."
Entertainment Weekly (8/8/03, p.74) - "...Frontman Jesse Lacey seems less interested in pummeling the listener with hooks than hooking you with carefully crafted dynamics and tempo shifts that add emotional heft to his sensitive-guy crooning..." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Brand New: Jesse Lacey (vocals); Vin Accardi (guitar); Garrett Tierney (bass); Brian Lane (drums).

Recorded at Reflection Sound Studios, Charlotte, North Carolina.

While it wouldn't be entirely out of line to align Brand New's second album DEJA ENTENDU with contemporaneous offerings by such West Coast emo-punk types as Rufio, et al, it would be a bit of a mental shortcut. The fact is that while DEJA ENTENDU has no shortage of blaring, punky guitar riffs, battleship-heavy drum pounding, and harried, sore-throat vocals, there's another level to the band's sound. When they're not shouting and thrashing, Brand New are eminently capable of hushed, melodic vocals, atmospheric guitar textures, and relatively complex song structures. They've got their dynamic shifts down too, as they easily maneuver back and forth between the two extremes throughout the album.

When listening to this album, make sure your ready to live through tremendous amounts of roller coaster feelings. Songs like Sic Transit Gloria and The Quiet Things... will make you sit and listen. As opposed to songs like Jude Law..will make u get up and shake it. All in all a good album for an ex TBS member. enjoy everyone, this is def. a cd u need in your collection.

A good mix of simplicity and technicality...Brand New is not your average punk band...they have something more to them...and this album expresses that well.
