Title Note

Over two decades worth of plucky, often gritty, always uber-Canadian teenagers have dealt with the slings and arrows of outrageous high school fortune within Degrassi's fictional walls. Perhaps its version of ONCE MORE WITH FEELING (where BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER's cast broke into song to the fans' almost universal delight), 2009's TV movie DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD finds many of the alumni of the `00s-incarnation of the program showing off their vocal chops over highly choreographed numbers. The musical theater songs comprise half of the 12-song soundtrack with basic High School Musical-style fare: upbeat, sing-a-long, and highly expositional, but often catchy. Degrassi is ever loyal to its Toronto roots, and the remaining six songs are also culled from that city's fertile ground. The results are all over the map, but there are a few real treasures, particularly Howie Beck's sinister-sweet "Watch Out For the Fuzz," a sly mix of Kings of Leon grit and Michael Penn power-pop.
