Title Note

The Faces: Rod Stewart (vocals); Ron Wood (guitar, harmonica, bass guitar, background vocals); Ronnie Lane (guitar, bass instrument, tambourine, background vocals); Ian McLagan (piano, harmonium, Clavinet, Hammond b-3 organ); Tetsu Yamauchi (bass instrument); Kenney Jones (drum, percussion).

Rhino's double-disc DEFINITIVE ROCK is a nice compromise for those looking for a little more than what is offered on the single disc best-of, GOOD BOYS WHEN THEY'RE ASLEEP, but aren't quite ready for the four discs' worth of sloppy bar rock and gin-soaked weepers found on FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR. The 30 tracks offered here show Rod Stewart and the boys at their most cavalier and raggedly swinging, but also make room for plenty of the tender, melancholy ballads that betray the fragile hearts beneath the drunken smirks. Perhaps most importantly, DEFINITIVE ROCK does a nice job of capturing the key odds and sods that, while they don't show the Faces at their sharpest, cut to the very essence of what the band was about--good times, both coming and going.
