5 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RECORD EVER MADE, June 28, 2009
By Jazz Lover
This tribute album actually surpasses the original, with lush arrangements and superlative musicianship. Ethel string quartet and Ernie Watts are fantastic, but it is arranger/pianist Laurence Hobgood and the great vocalist Kurt Elling that make this album a masterpiece. The title song alone is worth more than the price of the album, and "Lush Life" is achingly beautiful and shows off Kurts gorgeous voice and enormous range. "They Say Its Wonderful" is a swinging tribute to Sinatra and features a wonderful solo by Hobgood. I had never liked "Nancy With the Laughing Face" until I heard this rendition. Kurt and Laurence take it to a whole new level. "You Are Too Beautiful" showcases Kurts perfect voice and Ernies fabulous saxophone skills. This album is beyond beautiful and is a must-have for lovers of all music.
