Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer formed the Posies in Seattle in the mid '80s, releasing their classic debut in 1988. Their effortless melding of power-pop harmonies, punk energy, and insightful lyrics seemed at once a throwback to and a savvy reimagining of the '60s British Invasion. By 1990, they were signed to Geffen and released a trio of great albums there. The band's critical and popular ascent dovetailed nicely with the burgeoning grunge/alternative scene, but they were unceremoniously dropped from the label after failing to produce a "hit." Although the band had officially called it quits by the end of the millennium, Stringfellow and Auer toured and recorded as an acoustic duo, and were both a part of the Minus Five and the reformed Big Star. The full-band reunited in 2005 for a studio album and tour.

The Posies hailed from Seattle, but unlike their more celebrated geographic neighbors, they largely avoided grunge. Indeed, with its impossibly sweet Hollies-like harmonies and John Leckie's lush, detailed production, DEAR 23 is downright psychedelic in spots. At heart, however, it's a mature, thoughtful, occasionally folk-inflected pop album. Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow are unafraid to tackle grown-up emotions, as on the album's melancholy centerpieces, "Any Other Way" and "You Avoid Parties." The singer/songwriters are equally gifted at sprightly pop like the Monkees-like opener "My Big Mouth" and the brilliant single "Golden Blunders," as well as weightier efforts like the flinty "Help Yourself" and the endlessly swirling eight-minute closer, "Flood of Sunshine."
