One morning, the family dog comes downstairs dressed like dad, but this fatherly pooch is still a dog in many ways, such as bringing himself his own paper and slippers, and instead of a kiss goodnight, the kids get a lick.

Annotation

The family's father is out of town for the day and the dog comes downstairs dressed in Dad's clothes, right down to his yellow-framed glasses, purple tie, pink shirt, and jaunty yellow hat. He takes everyone on a picnic, hanging his head out the window as he drives. He chases a cat, self-assuredly slings burgers at a grill while adamantly refusing to cook hot dogs, barks out orders (just like Dad), and in the evening brings himself the newspaper and his slippers before blithely relaxing in the father's chair to read. At bedtime, the kids get a goodnight lick instead of a kiss. The children hope that the cat will soon dress like their mother. Full-color marker-and-watercolor cartoon illustrations accompany the text.
