Daughtry Artist Snapshot:

Daughtry is the rock band fronted by singer-songwriter Chris Daughtry. The eponymous frontman is one in a series of artists who, while not victorious on the popular television show AMERICAN IDOL, were given tremendous career boosts thanks to their appearances there (however brief). Daughtry finished fifth overall in 2006, and started his band immediately after elimination. His brand of heartfelt angst-tinged rock proved enormously successful, a testament as much to the power of AMERICAN IDOL as to the talent of Daughtry himself.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.80) - "The single 'It's Not Over' is ridiculously catchy..." -- Grade: B
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "[T]he man certainly has an impressive set of pipes..."

Title Note

Daughtry: Chris Daughtry (vocals); Phil X (guitar); Howard Benson (keyboards); Paul Bushnell (electric bass); Josh Freese (drums).

Additional personnel: Slash (guitar); Chris Chaney (electric bass).

As one of the finalists on the fifth season of the AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV show, North Carolina-based neo-grunge vocalist Chris Daughtry garnered even more attention by getting asked to be the frontman for the group Fuel, and then, surprisingly, declining the offer. This 2006 album, technically credited to the band Daughtry, reveals what the singer opted for instead, offering up impressively catchy, yet requisitely brooding, heavy rock, as best revealed on the emotive "It's Not Over" and the urgent "What I Want," which features former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash.

TOWER.COM REVIEW

Daughtry – Self-Titled

Daughtry having turned down an offering by Fuel for a front man position has gone on to lead his own project aptly tagged, Daughtry. The American Idol semi-finalist brings us his debut album on a balladic cheese filled silver platter.

The brusque voiced vocalist peels through his recorded first born, with a Nickelback-esque quality that would appeal to some. The songs while epic and powerful lean toward a sentimental jock rock sound that may be repetitious and uninteresting for others.

We can however commend him on his wailing vocal techniques and ability to write fairly thought provoking lyrics for a somewhat respectable rock crowd. I say somewhat respectable, as the fan base sits outside the realm of loyal rock followers with a thirst for innovation and creativity, and more towards radio single lovers with an affinity for sentimental guitar grinders and raspy voices.

The howling Chris Daughtry turns on quite the tap for himself with this release. A bright future maybe in store for the Chad Kroeger and Scott Anderson hybrid however his margin of error is incredibly tiny considering the vast ocean of like minded musicians surrounding him.

Favorite Songs: “Over You”, “Breakdown”
