Review

Rolling Stone (5/14/98, pp.60-61) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...a bleak, conceptual tale of self-loathing, self-abuse and, eventually, self-destruction....the group displays real progress, mixing industrial-metal clamor with stark tribal beats..."

Title Note

Stabbing Westward: Andrew Kubiszewski (vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums); Christopher Hall (vocals, guitar); Marcus Eliopulos (guitar); Walter Flakus (keyboards); Jim Sellers (bass).

Producers: Stabbing Westward, Dave Jerden, Ulrich Wild.

All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.

Stabbing Westward's third full-length album finds the band expanding and progressing, while maintaining their signature sound. The group that brought us "What Do I Have To Do?" in 1996 has returned with a slightly darker, more aggressive record. DARKEST DAYS is hard-edged synth-rock that doesn't stray far enough from the band's earlier sound to alienate longtime fans.

The album is very reminiscent of Nine Inch Nail's DOWNWARD SPIRAL, so fans of Trent Reznor's music and production style are bound to be pleased. While there's an angry and alienated theme throughout, the tempos of the tunes are widely varied. Highlights include the title track and "Save Yourself," where singer Christopher Hall advises his significant other that he has his own problems and is no savior. All in all, DARKEST DAYS is catchy, heartfelt and a sign of continued progression from a talented band.
