Review

The Wire (p.48) - "THE CURSE OF MIDNIGHT MARY is the sound of Connors at his bluesiest -- moaning and sliding like a mutant son of Blind Willie Johnson."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hese nine chants have more in common with the feral primitivism of Blind Willie Johnson and Charlie Patton than the languorous note raptures of Connors' more recent output. He accompanies these raw and sometimes vigorous displays with emotive guttural moans..."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.51) - "Playing acoustic and singing over his picking and slide work in a wordless falsetto moan, Connors uses country blues sounds and forms as his vehicle to get to the place of blues myth."

Title Note

Personnel: Loren Connors (vocals, acoustic guitar).

Adjectives like "haunted," "possessed," and "cursed" tend to be overused when the subject is blues music, but they have described few albums as accurately as THE CURSE OF MIDNIGHT MARY. Recorded by experimental-blues master Loren Connors in 1981 at a cemetary in Connecticut (in defiance of a local legend featuring the Mary of the album's title) onto cassette and released for the first time in 2008, the album features nine "chants"--i.e., pained blues moans echoing from the brink of insanity and framed by dilapidated acoustic slide riffs and stomped feet. Splashes of familiarity arise here and there--such as the quote of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move" in "Chant 8," but mostly this is delta blues boiled down to its quivering, atmospheric, bedeviled essence.
