One would think the psych juggernaut that is Acid Mothers Temple would run out of steam at some point. Seriously, how many different combinations of King Crimson and Hawkwind are there? Apparently plenty, as CRYSTAL RAINBOW PYRAMID UNDER THE STARS, the band's 2007 full-length for Important Records, so aptly shows. Although the band follow a similar path toward sonic ecstasy as on many of their other albums, the generally fuzz-drenched collective offer strikingly pristine sonics here, positioning their progressive leanings ahead of their more acid-tinged ones. The addition of vocalist Kitagawa Hao also adds a new dimension, but as is always the case with AMT, the real draw is lead guitarist and collective mastermind Kawabata Makoto's epic six-string vision quests. Heavy and heady as always, but never business as usual.
