As the guitarist and producer of At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez established himself as a genre-jumper par excellence, rivaling Frank Zappa in the musical twists and turns department. EL GRUPO NUEVO DE OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ finds the bushy-haired rocker working true to form, shifting between styles, tempos, rhythms, keys, and timbre in a fashion that seems at once tightly composed and wildly cacophonous. From the electronic blips and frenetic drumming of "Puny Humans" to the insistently funky, Primus-like riff of "Half Kleptos," Rodriguez-Lopez shows that his "nuevo" project is much like his old: expectedly unexpected.
