Deerhunter Artist Snapshot:

The controversial ambient-indie ensemble Deerhunter drew considerable attention in 2006 and 2007 as much for a series of challenging shoegaze-inspired recordings as for the blog writings of skeletal frontman Bradford Cox. An open book of sorts, Cox uses Deerhunter (and, apparently, his blog) as an outlet to confront his personal demons. At times quite beautiful, at others disarmingly abstract, Deerhunter experiments with various left-field recording and performing techniques to create their soundscapes. The Atlanta-based band has toured with Battles, the Fiery Furnaces, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among other 21st-century indie heavyweights.

Review

Spin (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he watery orchestral wash of 'Providence' melds gorgeously with CRYPTOGRAMS' brightest moment..."
Uncut (p.73) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Side 2 is characterized by the earnest vocals and simple, mist-shrouded harmonic progressions of 'Strange Lights' recalling Ride."
Magnet (p.96) - "Eventually, CRYPTOGRAMS' title song surfaces and it's a good one, with a crisply skipping beat and reverb-soaked guitars."
The Wire (p.35) - Included in The Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2007".
CMJ (p.40) - "The band pulls off their stylistic switcharoo with studied ease....CRYPTOGRAMS has a cohesiveness and flow that TURN IT UP lacked."
