Annotation

An ancient legend collides with the life of an orphaned young student in volume one of a fantasy shojo manga (female-oriented Japanese graphic novel) series. Mahiru has always been somewhat strange. She sees odd visions underwater and is visited monthly by a dream about a princess who reneged on her promise to marry a demon. And while anyone who touches Mahiru is visited by fantastic good luck, she herself is monumentally unlucky. One day, she meets a quartet of demons who call themselves the Lunar Race, claim that she is the descendant of the princess that she's been dreaming of, and demand her help in securing a jewel that will increase their powers. The black-and-white art, presented in the original Japanese right-to-left orientation, features typically big-eyed, cute depictions of the present-day characters, but is occasionally intercut with more lush folktale imagery. Fans of the manga and anime series Lupin III will be amused to note that the detective pursuing the demons is reminiscent both in looks and manner of a younger, buffer Inspector Zenigata.
