Review

Spin (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] vaguely British, Robyn Hitchcock-esque vocals warped by reverb and Echoplex mazes; surrealistic, first-thought-next-thought lyrics; sudden loud crunches of lo-fi guitar; and melodies that soar..."

Title Note

Robert Pollard: Robert Pollard (vocals, acoustic guitar); Chris George (cello); Todd Tobias.

Recording information: Waterloo Sound, Kent, Ohio.

More time away from Guided By Voices and increased attention to his solo work has inarguably helped Robert Pollard refine his status as a pop songwriter extraordinaire. Comparable to Paul Westerberg's simultaneous exodus from the bratty punk of the Replacements, Pollard's CRAWLING DISTANCE is mature and moving, even if it's still fundamentally DIY with all the lo-fi trappings. "It's Easy" lends his weary rasp to a layered acoustic production that has the minimal psychedelic appeal of a Beatles classic like "Across the Universe." But opener "Faking My Harlequin" and "Silence Be Destroyed" still rely on the pulse of a rollicking rhythm section and his trademark transcendent choruses. As usual, there's little filler on DISTANCE, despite Pollard's continuing, and welcome, prolific output.
