Review

Entertainment Weekly (8/4/00, p.87) - "...Culled from out-of-print records and rerecorded with contemporary backing....the former World Bareback Riding champion has no trouble evoking the dust of the cowboy lifestyle..." - Rating: B

Title Note

COWBOY contains re-recorded versions of Chris LeDoux' older hits.

Personnel: Chris LeDoux (vocals); Richard Bennett (acoustic & electric guitars, 6-string bass); Mac McAnally (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, background vocals); Jack Pearson (electric & National guitars); Doyle Grisham (steel guitar); Scooter Muse (banjo); Larry Franklin (mandolin, fiddle); Greg "Fingers" Taylor (harmonica); Jimmy Fadden (Jew's harp); Pete Wasner (piano, Wurlitzer piano); Steve Nathan (piano, Hammond B-3, keyboards); Harry Stinson (background vocals).

Includes liner notes by Chris LeDoux.

Long before Garth Brooks namechecked him in his first single "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)," Chris LeDoux was a legend--a champion rodeo rider, singer, and songwriter. By the time Capitol Records signed LeDoux in the early '90s, he'd released 22 albums on his own. COWBOY presents the re-recorded best of those early songs.

LeDoux conveys a sense of authenticity that the typical faux-cowboy country star can never hope to approximate, painting a vivid picture of the cowboy mindset and the rodeo lifestyle in songs such as "Runnin' Through the Rain," "Ten Seconds in the Saddle," and "A Cowboy's Got to Ride." He sings eloquently about his personal life in "Our First Year," and displays a wicked sense of humor in songs such as "I'm Country," which ends with a hilarious twist. But the true standout here is "Silence on the Line," a song LeDoux didn't write. This devastating track about a rodeo man who wants to come home to his wife will bring tears to your eyes and send chills down your spine. With its peek into LeDoux's world, COWBOY may be the closest a city slicker can get to the rodeo without actually sitting in the saddle.
