Review

Rolling Stone (p.71) - "COWARD is a rare adventure: a series of dreams and sound portraits, played by Cline on an overdubbed ensemble's worth of guitars, etc...."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.53) - "From the opening dronescape to lush multi-tracked 12-string fantasies where he gets in touch with his live of Towner and Gismonti, Cline the romantic is on display here."

Title Note

Personnel: Nels Cline (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, sound effects).

Nels Cline is a "Guitar God" cut of an entirely different cloth. Possessing a seemingly limitless capacity for self-reinvention, Cline's expansive but thoughtful approach to guitar improvisation--most notably for alt-country experimentalists Wilco--has crisscrossed a mind-boggling array of musical styles within the free jazz, rock, and avant-garde idioms. Cline's fearless sensibility shows no sign of flagging on the ironically titled COWARD, the guitarist's 2009 solo effort. Deploying a constantly changing palette of sounds, Cline's wayward explorations never come across as haphazard or throwaway experimentations at the cost of musical structure. Long-form explorations such as the 18-minute epic, "Rod Poole's Gradual Ascent to Heaven," build from gentle acoustic thrums to wracked pile-ups of jagged, zither-like cacophony to ringing mantra-like repetitions, maintaining a sustained level of interest and engagement throughout. Meanwhile, on the more episodic "Onan Suite," Cline constructs bruising solo and backing tracks from a variety of non-traditional means from sampled and rhythm machine accompaniment to looping pedals, upending the often staid and academic tropes of solo improv jazz guitar.
