Though Mandy Moore's path to stardom was similar to those followed by other one-time teen sensations such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson, Moore quickly emerged as the most mature and level-headed of the bunch. She scored a few minor hits in a teen-pop/R&B mode before branching out stylistically and releasing an album of diverse covers and an album of original material she wrote herself. Though Moore has never come close to matching the success of her teen pop contemporaries, she's had a notably successful film career and has managed to stay refreshingly controversy-free despite being a paparazzi favorite.

On the doorstep of 21, Moore's shift into adult-artist mode found her reinterpreting a wide array of classic pop songs from the '70s and '80s on the aptly titled COVERATE. From the opening jangle of XTC's "Sense Working Overtime," this New Hampshire native breezily digs into a wide range of material, from the delicate, introspective Cat Stevens nugget "Moonshadow" to Todd Rundgren's melancholy musical handshake "Can We Still Be Friends." Producer John Fields incorporates a slightly mechanized beat that compliments the majestic brass arrangements found in The Waterboys' "The Whole of the Moon" and the slightest hint of a synth wash in John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith In Me." X drummer DJ Bonebrake's vibraphone playing adds a sophisticated sheen to Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us in Two." COVERAGE successfully transports Mandy Moore into the world of adult pop.
