The Frames Artist Snapshot:

Irish fans have devoured the passionate folk-pop stylings of Dublin's the Frames since 1990, witnessing as their music transformed from brash but literate indie-folk to a sparser and more experimental brand of introspection. But U.S. audiences may be more familiar with the outfit's charming lead vocalist Glen Hansard, who has starred in two beloved music-oriented films, 1991's THE COMMITMENTS and the 2006 hit ONCE. The latter film, directed by their former bass player John Carney, featured original music by Hansard and the Frames. The movie's popularity helped to boost the Stateside exposure and sales of the band's 2006 album, THE COST, arguably their most mature and accomplished work. That the album was recorded almost completely live in the studio attests to the long-standing ensemble's remarkable rapport.

Q (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he stirring, rounded collection leader Glen Hansard has hinted at since they formed in 1990."
Uncut (p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "There's a nervy, frayed soulfulness to these songs..."
Alternative Press (p.143) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "All the songs are enjoyable....[R]edemption is to be had in 'True,' whose lone guitar entry slowly builds to pure emotive brilliance."
CMJ (p.40) - "[T]he Frames have crafted a big, swooning rock record that's polished but not over produced, emotional but thankfully not emo."

Product note

This follow-up to the Frames' acclaimed 2004 Anti debut, BURN THE MAPS, finds the beloved Irish rock band working in the same widescreen scope as that album, with songs ebbing and flowing with crashing waves of guitar lines and the fascinatingly emotive vocals of frontman Glen Hansard. Many of the tunes on THE COST unwind slowly, particularly the mesmerizing opener, "Song for Someone," but always remain unpredictable, as on "Rise," which moves from a delicate, folk-like mood to a brief, intense furor, and "True," a lilting ballad lined with scattered shards of feedback. Though many Frames fans might think of BURN THE MAPS as impossible to top, THE COST easily rivals its predecessor and stands as one of the band's most accomplished records.
