Review

The Source (7/01, pp.188-90) - 3.5 mics out of 5 - "...Sheer passion. It's obvious that she wrote her own rhymes this time around...And her credible list of guest appearances makes the album an ever sharper listen....a sophmore effort that surpasses her first."

It seems like such a long time since Queen Pen first came to public attention via her guest appearance on Blackstreet's hit "No Diggity," but a mere four years separate her hugely successful debut album from its followup. Though that amount of time can seem like an eternity in the mercurial world of hip-hop, CONVERSATIONS WITH THE QUEEN finds the rapper coming on as hard and uncompromising as ever, if not even more so. Rather than getting lazy in the wake of her success, Pen seems to have gained even more vitriol from the underside of fame and wealth. Throughout CONVERSATIONS, she goes to great pains to assure her listeners that she's coming on harder than ever, and that she has little use for those who are entranced by money and power. Pen revels in the thug life, and that fact is amply demonstrated by the unrelenting, hard-edged assault of her verbal skills on this sophomore release.
