Title Note

In the "Contemporaries of Mozart" series from Chandos, we hear the symphonies of Samuel Wesley, a largely unknown English Composer who was called by some "the English Mozart". In fact, Wesley came from a similar musical family and displayed a similarly prodigious childhood, composing large works at a very young age. However, his works contain distinctively English qualities and a sound all their own. Traces of Haydn, Bach, and Mozart (if not as maddeningly genius) are present in his symphonies, all very unique blendings of the "old" with the "new". Wesley did much during his time to champion the work of J.S. Bach, and despite being centered in the Classical period his music possesses Baroque stylings.

Who better than the London Mozart Players to tackle this series? Their insight to the period styles and history behind composers such as Wesley shows in the invested playing we find here. For those wishing to hear "the English Mozart", this will be their disc.
