On October 27, 2007, the Vatican's "Paolo VI" Audience Hall was the venue for an exceptional performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, given in honour of Pope Benedict XVI. Internationally acclaimed maestro Mariss Jansons conducted the Symphonieorchester und Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks in the presence of his Holiness and an audience of 7000. Beethoven's masterpiece was preceded by the motet "Tu es Petrus" by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. This singular event was
captured for TV and DVD by star music-fi lm director Brian Large. The DVD also contains Pope Benedict's address to the artists and guests.
The documentary film Götterfunken für den Papst ("Divine Spark for the Pope"), by Barbara Schepanek and Ralph Gladitz, shows the complex preparations that went on in advance of the concert, accompanies pilgrims on their journey to Rome, includes interviews with the musicians and goes backstage before and after the event.
