Though Non-Place label owner Burnt Friedman is known as a cutting edge producer of brooding, dub-steeped electronica, he possesses an insatiable sense of musical curiousity that often leads his work to venture far outside the bounds of traditional electronica. Coming hot on the heels of JUST LANDED, an adventurous foray into rough-hewn dub and live instrumentation, 2000's CON RITMO documents Friedman's obsession with Latin American rhythms and musical textures. Percussionist Bernie `The Bolt' sets the tone for the album with a dizzying array of unorthodox sounds that mesh perfectly with Burnt's programmed beats, while Joseph Suchy's gentle, bossa-inflected guitar work nicely balances some of the more dissonant compositional tendencies. Simultaneously classicist and boundary pushing, CON RITMO is a bracingly experimental work that also calls to mind the lush productions of classic bossa nova artists like Joao Gilberto and Marcus Valle.
