Rogers & Hart: Joseph S. Szurly, Brian Drutman.
Recording information: 1928 - 1944.
The Rogers & Hart installment of the COMPOSERS ON BROADWAY series (which also includes discs devoted to George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter) is an 11-song sampler of some of the duo's best work. The team penned about thirty musicals together, and while the librettos were largely forgettable, many of the songs the two wrote together have gone on to become American standards. "My Funny Valentine" and "The Lady is a Tramp" are curiously missing here, but "Bewitched," "You Took Advantage of Me," and "It Never Entered My Mind" make up for their absence. Fans will likely already have these classic tunes on other collections, but COMPOSERS ON BROADWAY is a fine introduction to an American songwriting institution.
