Leonard Bernstein: Joseph S. Szurly, Brian Drutman.
Recording information: 1944 - 1976.
Containing excerpts from a wide variety of Leonard Bernstein's successful and not-so-successful Broadway works, this best-of includes his "Overture" and "Glitter and Be Gay," from the fraught production of CANDIDE, first presented in 1957 just before the better-known WEST SIDE STORY, as well as several selections from the latter musical. "America" substitutes Rita Moreno's spunky delivery for Tatiana Troyanos's more technically correct version, while ON THE TOWN's "I Can Cook Too," sung by the inimitable Nancy Walker, is a succinct summation of the worldview of the confident, sassy, post-war New York single gal.
