Carl Perkins Artist Snapshot:

Rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins emerged in the 1950s around the same time as Elvis Presley, with a similar blend of country and R&B. He was denied Elvis-level fame due to poor timing, bad breaks, and a relative lack of the sex appeal that aided Presley's career. Nevertheless, Perkins was one of rock & roll's first great auteurs, and his early work was a crucial element of the rockabilly template. His songs were covered by everyone from the Beatles to the King himself, and when he died in 1998 he was eulogized as a giant of rock & roll.

Recorded at Sun Studios, Memphis, Tennessee between 1954 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Allen J. Wiener.

Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California).

Rockabilly heaven. Recorded between 1954-'57, this compilation features almost all of Perkins' best-known songs, either through being hits in their own right or through celebrated covers. The hits, of course, include the anthemic "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Boppin' the Blues"; the covers include two classics memorably remade by the Beatles , "Matchbox" and "Honey Don't."

Pick hits amongst the rest include the Hank Williams-ish ballads "Turn Around" and "Let the Jukebox Keep on Playing," the pricelessly titled rocker "I'm Sorry, I'm Not Sorry," with one of Perkins' most fluid guitar solos, and the infectious "True Love," with the singer's voice speeded up intriguingly.
