Album Description

Combining two complete Prestige LPs, LIVE AT THE BARREL, VOLUMES ONE and TWO, recorded live at the legendary St. Louis club in 1952, OUR DELIGHT showcases over 74 minutes of prime live Miles at the peak of his bop prowess. Forrest at the time was riding high on the R&B charts with his classic single "Night Train," but the tenor's quartet, featuring gifted pianist Charles Fox, was as adept at hard bop as they were at honking R&B. Spurred by the soulful earthiness of the Forrest quartet, former hometown boy Davis' playing is more adventurous than usual for the time. Here, the lengendary trumpeter often dispenses with his trademark cool sophistication (except on a restrained "What's New," a tune that finds Davis and Forrest echoing each other's melodic lines before trading economical solos) in favor of fiery improvisations. The authentic club ambience of the recording only adds to its impact.
