This CD has all 15 formerly rare Anita O'Day recordings from 1949-50 that were formerly on a Tono LP, plus nine earlier selections. The latter consists of a long-lost four-song Capitol date (forgotten until the mid-1990s) that finds the singer in excellent form with a Los Angeles pickup group, as well as her five transcription performances from 1945 in which she is accompanied by the Nat King Cole Trio. The 1949-50 recordings find the singer doing her best on a wide variety of material that ranges from a few standards (such as "You Took Advantage of Me" and "I Apologize") to a variety of novelties (including her hillbillyish "Lovesick Blues" and the moderately humorous "Yea Boo"), "Tennessee Waltz," and a bunch of forgettable material. Anita O'Day fans will want this interesting set, as she does her very best throughout, but more casual listeners are advised to get her 1950s Verve albums first. ~ Scott Yanow
