Review

Q (p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The likes of 'Crushed' and 'What Have I Said Now?' remain bedsit classics, with Gedge's voice a thing of atonal poignancy..."

Title Note

The Wedding Present: Chris Cooper, Kari Paavola, Darren Belk, Hugh Kelly Jnr, Jayne Lockey, John Parkes, Keith Gregory, Katherine Kontz, Len Liggins, Mike Stout, Paul Dorrington, Peter Solowka, Roman Remeynes, Ron Rom, Shaun Charman, David Lewis Gedge, Simon Smith, Steve Fisk, Simon Cleave, Terry De Castro.

Recording information: 1986 - 2004.

Of all the bands he recorded with over the years, none of them had quite as close a relationship with John Peel as the Wedding Present. He had a big hand in breaking the band and helped cultivate their development through many session performances. The exhaustive COMPLETE PEEL SESSIONS 1986-2004 collects all those shows in one beautifully packaged box set. The sheer volume of sessions the band and Peel collaborated on is staggering, and the box spreads tracks over six discs.

All the touchstones of the band's inimitable career are here: the high-tension guitars of the GEORGE BEST era, the immersion into Ukrainian folk music, and the penchant for oddball covers. While the band worked with Steve Albini, who also tried to capture Peel's rawer-is-better approach, they never quite sounded as good as when they were working with the man himself. Thus, COMPLETE PEEL SESSIONS 1986-2004 is the best possible Wedding Present retrospective, even while foregoing any tracks from their studio albums. They sound looser on these sessions than they ever did in the studio, and their sometimes strange choices sound perfectly natural in a less rarified setting.
