Not unlike his friend Bobby Darin, Dion Dimucci was a native New Yorker who started out as a rock & roller in the 1950s and went through a series of drastic stylistic changes. He began as a doo wop hitmaker with his group the Belmonts, turning out such smashes as "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer." Over the ensuing decades, the artistically restless Dion tried his hand at blues, folk-rock, Phil Spector-produced pop, and hard-edged rock & roll, managing to maintain his credibility and integrity all along the way, and eventually getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Title Note

COMPLETE DION & THE BELMONTS collects all the work recorded by the 1950s vocal group for Laurie Records. Considering Dion & the Belmonts were only together for three years, their output was pretty impressive: there are 51 songs spread out over two discs here. Rock & roll fans looking for more energetic, R&B-influenced tunes on the order of "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer" might be in for a surprise, though.

While the Dion & the Belmonts classics "I Wonder Why" and "A Teenager in Love" are here, of course, much of this material is in the vein of mainstream 1950s pop and standards ("In the Still of the Night," "That's My Desire"). COMPLETE may not be the best bet for casual fans, then, who would be better serviced by a single-disc greatest hits collection. Completists, on the other hand, will find much to value on this set, especially given its excellent sound and detailed liner notes.
