Title Note

Sweden's The Soundtrack of Our Lives have always thought big, but the 2009 double-album, COMMUNION, with its ridiculous breakfast drink send-up cover and inevitable concept (each of the album's 24 songs ostensibly represents an hour of the day), is overblown even by the group's somewhat lofty standards. Not that this is a bad thing. TSOOL's mid-tempo hard rock has always sounded best at its most wide-screen and massive, and COMMUNION's two platters afford plenty of room for the group to stretch out. Though the track list is surprisingly short on out-and-out WHO'S NEXT-style anthems ("Saturation Wanderers" qualifies, barely), and the sound is as indebted to Britpop as to those early-'70s dinosaurs TSOOL has made no secret of worshipping (a cover of Nick Drake's "Fly" is included), COMMUNION works more often than not--largely as a result of a set of winning songs such as "Passover," "The Ego Delusion," and the jaunty "Flipside," that transcend their obvious influences.

Swedish power pop-psychedelicists The Soundtrack of Our Lives return in force with the Communion, a double album opus containing 24 tracks dedicated to the moods of each hour of the day and night. On Communion, their first album in nearly four years, caftan-sporting Norseman Ebbot Lundberg and company blast through a veritable pharmacopeia of musical medication for the often insidious symptoms of modern society. But here Soundtrack not only point out the ills experienced by modern man, they offer actual cures in the form of buzzing guitars and glistening pop rock anthems. Despite already counting Grammy nominations (Behind the Music 2003) opening slots for the icons of rock (The Rolling Stones, U2, The Black Crowes, Oasis) and nearly never ending headlining tours of the world as career milestones, the breadth and intensity of Communionknows no equal in the band's catalog and reminds the world why The Soundtrack of Our Lives remains one of rock's most profound and eccentric voices.
