Until the release of this debut album in 2009, pop-punk band Single File scrapped it out for several years, putting their all into touring, and pulling off guerilla gigs like busking for ticket-holders at the Warped Tour. After four EPs, this long-player reflects the band's confidence, rapport--and surprising chops. The opener "Mannequin Loveseat" smoothly blends bouncy, sun-bleached vocal harmonies with a tough, guitar-fueled chorus. "Melody of You" sports a jazzy bass breakdown, startling little mid-song reveries, and some of the most sophisticated drumming you'll hear on an emo album. Touches like these make COMMON STRUGGLES sound...uncommon.
