J. Courtney Sullivan's debut novel examines the evolving relationship between four friends who meet as roommates in their first year at the all-female Smith College. At first, the four appear to fall into familiar tropes--a Catholic who finds solace in drinking, a Southern belle engaged to her high school sweetheart, a radical feminist, and a prim girl mourning the death of her mother. But the freedom of college life soon coaxes them out of their molds, as they explore new ideas and identities while engaging in various illicit behaviors.
