Big Wreck, Ian Thornley's previous project, was a pop band at its core, mixing late-1990s alternative rock with more ambient textures reminiscent of the Cure and New Order. With Thornley's self-titled band, the singer jacks up the big guitar and drum sounds, arriving at a sound midway between Big Wreck's Jane's Addiction fetish and the ultra-heavy throb of nu-metal. Thornley's voice often recalls Chris Cornell's golden pipes, and the former shares the latter's penchant for soaring vocal hooks as well. There's also a bit of Pink Floyd/Beatles-style dreaminess in the mix, especially on acoustic guitar-led songs such as "The Going Rate (My Fix)" and "All Comes Out In the Wash." (This vibe is also enhanced by the trippy album artwork courtesy of Storm Thorgerson, the man behind several of Floyd's most well known LP covers). An unusually diverse take on heavy music, COME AGAIN proves that metal and variety needn't be mutually exclusive terms.
