Morris Day is known mainly as Prince's rival in PURPLE RAIN, but his relationship with the royal star had much deeper roots. High school classmates before Prince embarked on a solo career, their project The Time, a band focused more on strutting showbiz R&B, featured Prince compositions, with the flamboyant Day serving as lead vocalist. Among its crack personnel, The Time included future production wizards Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Day's star rose alongside Prince's supernova during the 1980s. Following The Time's demise, Day went solo, but failed to see major success without Prince's songwriting and production acumen. Nonetheless, Day remains a potent live draw, with his "valet," Jerome, still attending to his every need on stage.
