This soundtrack of the musical theatre production of Alice Walker's THE COLOR PURPLE contains superb musical performances from the original cast, including La Chanze as the heroine Celie, Kingsley Leggs as the brutal Mister, and Elisabeth Withers-Mendes as the juke-joint singer Shug Avery. The blues- and gospel-flavored music superbly captures the plot's emotional upheavals, the arrangements sparkle, and the singing is uniformly excellent.
