Prefab Sprout earned critical hosannas when it released its second album, STEVE MCQUEEN, in 1985. Titled TWO WHEELS GOOD in North America, the record showcased the incisive, sophisticated songs of leader Paddy McAloon, whose blend of folk-rock and complex popcraft contrasted greatly with the new wave trends of the time. People like Pete Townshend were quick to hail McAloon as a major talent. While McAloon never evolved into a singing-songwriting force along the lines of, say, Elvis Costello, many still revere the group and its music.

THE COLLECTION is an excellent two-disc overview of Prefab Sprout, one of the best UK college-rock bands of the 1980s and early '90s. The group was the brainchild of singer/songwriter Paddy McAloon. (His brother, bassist Martin McAloon, was the only other constant member, although Wendy Smith's helium-toned backing vocals were an integral part of the band's classic era.) A smoky-voiced amalgam of Cole Porter and Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, with Paul McCartney's ear for melody, McAloon regularly took three to five years between releases, writing and sometimes recording entire albums' worth of unreleased songs in between. Although perfectly formed suites like the band's twin masterpieces, STEVE MCQUEEN (re-titled TWO WHEELS GOOD in the US after the actor's estate complained) and JORDAN: THE COMEBACK, are best heard in their entirety, THE COLLECTION is particularly essential for American fans. Besides the UK-only debut single, "Lions in My Own Garden (Exit Someone)," it has several tracks from PROTEST SONGS and ANDROMEDA HEIGHTS, albums never released in the states.
