Review

"Day Lewis takes over from the momorable Blunden edition Blunden's splendid memoir of Owen with its tantalizing snippets from the letters of which we still await, more than forty years after the event, a complete edition. Having worked through all the available manuscript material, Day Lewis offers us what is most likely the definitive text....the purpose of his notes is not, as Day Lewis insists, to give a complete apparatus criticus, but one regrets that he saw fit to leave out of them the discarded readings of 'Strange Meeting' that Blunden prints....The Collected Poems usefully fills in for us, in its introduction, that part of Owen's biography on which Blunden is noticeably blank--the time between Owen's curacy of 1911 and his job as a tutor in France in 1913."

"Wilfred Owen's 20 or so effective poems, all quite short, belong to a brief, abnormal moment in English history, and seem to refer to nothing specific outside it. That moment--that last two yeasr of trench warfare in france, 1916-1918--was so privately English (and perhaps German) and such a deeply shocking and formative experience for us that it is easy to see some of the reasons why Yeats dismissed Owen's verse (largely on principle), and why many discriminating American readers find it hard to account for his reputation, and why with the English his reputation is so high....The big thing behind these few short poems that makes them live...is Owen's genius for immersing himself in and somehow absorbing that unprecedented experience of ghastliness, the reality of that huge mass of dumb, disillusioned, trapped, dying men. His every line is saturated with the vastness of it, a hallucinated telescope into the cluttered thick of it--and always, at bottom, the redeeming discovery."

Publisher's note

This definitive edition of Owen's poetry, based on a close study of the ms. sources in the British Museum and elsewhere, contains a selection of the poet's juvenilia and several other unpublished poems, as well as those which have appeared in the editions edited by Siegfried Sassoon and Edmund Blunden.
