Title Note

Considering how much time and effort the notoriously perfectionist David Bowie invests in his music, and knowing how self-consciously cerebral he can be, he allows remixers an enormous amount of leeway when it comes to messing with his muse. From the manifold abuses wrought upon his contributions to the Labyrinth soundtrack album and on to the positively embarrassing wealth of remixes perpetrated upon Black Tie White Noise, the truly completist Bowie collector has a minor mountain's worth of mixes to track down. And that's a quest that Club Bowie only begins, with its selection of no more than nine revisions from the late '90s and beyond, ranging from the really rather good (Scumfrog's "Loving the Alien" and Solaris' "Fashion") to the frankly appalling (almost everything else). There is a great Bowie remix album out there somewhere, something that picks up the nine-minute "Cat People" that made it onto an Australian promo in 1982, the extended "Absolute Beginners," and the Pet Shop Boys' masterful revision of "Hallo Spaceboy." What it does not need are the "Club Bolly" assaults on "Let's Dance" and "China Girl," Danny Sabre's pointless revision of "Magic Dance," and David Guetta's mind-charringly monotonous march through "Heroes." That, however, is what Club Bowie delivers, and the sooner the place is closed down, the better. ~ Dave Thompson

Capitalizing on the surprise success of Scumfrog's remix of "Loving the Alien," EMI sneaks out this collection of "Rare and Unreleased 12" Mixes." They could have remained "Rare and Unreleased" and no one but the Bowie completist would have minded, but as a little treat for the fanatic it does all right. Scumfrog's mix is inspired and worth having since he captures the original cut's dreaminess and runs with it, but with his midtempo remix of "This Is Not America," he takes Bowie out of the picture almost entirely, totally changing the track. Two totally different takes on "Let's Dance" (one straightforward, one totally Bollywood) are welcome, as are the slinky "Shout" (a thumping version of "Fashion") and the rough and minimal "Just for One Day (Heroes)." Lord knows why you'd ever need a remix of "Magic Dance" from the Labyrinth soundtrack, and the fact that a remix of "Starman" just missed being on the set is especially disappointing. Most of the mixes sound a bit dated and thump and bump along like the laptop never happened. As Bowie collections go this is as useful as the all-instrumental All Saints, but at least it'll keep the hardcore off eBay. ~ David Jeffries
