Title Note

Slightly Stoopid: Miles , Kyle (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); OG (vocals, percussion); Rymo (vibraphone, drums).

Recording information: Total Access, Redondo Beach, California (2005).

Ocean Beach, California's Slighty Stoopid is a grassroots phenomenon, playing over 200 gigs per year to a huge network of rabid fans, while remaining almost completely outside of the major-label machine. Starting as an acoustic duo, frontmen Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald developed a unique hybrid style that combines a druggy base of dub and roots reggae with touches of punk, metal, hip-hop, and psychedelia. CLOSER TO THE SUN is one of the expanded combo's most fully realized efforts, and sports a tight-but-relaxed ensemble sound that reveals the benefits of hard touring. "Somebody" features old-school turntable scratching and sampling matched with a funky acoustic guitar riff reminiscent of Jack Johnson. "See It No Other Way" is a hazy, echo-heavy dub groove with a guest toasting performance from reggae giant Barrington Levy. "Nothing Over Me" begins with a vintage video-game sample, before bursting into a wall of metallic guitars that recalls late-1980s Anthrax. A fascinating slice of deep reggae fed though the lens of the American jam-band underground, CLOSER TO THE SUN is an intriguing and hip-shaking listen.
