Album Description

The National steel guitar was a relatively new instrument when these recordings were made in the 1920s and 1930s, and these masterful Hawaiian players, working mostly on the mainland, were pivotal in introducing slide techniques to both country and western players (who adapted National steel techniques to the laptop dobro) and blues players from the Delta (who adopted a bottleneck style) and elsewhere. This disc, assembled by the fine blues reissue label Catfish Records, makes an excellent introduction to a frequently overlooked period in the history of American guitar playing. Among the highlights are the delicate, chiming "Maui" by Palakiku and Paaluhi, and a jaunty take on the classic "Stack O Lee Blues" by a trio called King, Queen & Jack. ~ Steve Leggett
