Like its Classic 60s Soul, Vol. 1 companion piece, BMG Special Products' Classic 70s Soul, Vol. 1 is a fairly entertaining sampler of familiar hits and cult singles from the decade. Although the song selection appears random, the ten-track compilation does have a number of good moments, such as the Spinners' "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," Gladys Knight & the Pips' "On and On," the Main Ingredient's "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely," the Moments' "Love on a Two Way Street," Sylvia's "Pillow Talk," the Friends of Distinction's "Love Me or Let Me Be Lonely," and the Chi-Lites' "A Letter to Myself." Though this collection seems to have been compiled with little rhyme or reason, you can't argue with the quality of the music on board. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
