Annotation

The Clash were an enthralling mix of raw punk energy, old-fashioned rock-&-roll raunch, and radical, often contradictory grass-roots politics. The evolution from their 1976 origins as barely competent London punk rockers to perhaps the most influential band of the post-punk era is charted in Marcus Gray's RETURN OF THE LAST GANG IN TOWN, an updated edition of his original minutely researched, detail-packed journey through the band's sometimes rocky career. The original edition of LAST GANG IN TOWN sparked considerable controversy with its revelations that The Clash had often mythologized their earlier lives in order to better accommodate their anti-authoritarian punk credentials. This later volume retains and expands on Gray's original views, in addition to featuring spicier tales of sex and drugs. It portrays the mixed critical reception of The Clash's epochal 1979 LONDON CALLING album, the band's transition from cult act to major rock phenomenon with 1982's COMBAT ROCK, and their eventual demise in 1985. With a completely rewritten third section analyzing The Clash's final years after the departure of guitarist Mick Jones and drummer Topper Headon, and a new fourth part documenting the manipulation of the band's post-breakup image, RETURN is an informative, authoritative chronicle of this archetypal punk rock band's career.
