Review

"[Paulo] Lins's insider knowledge...combined with his grasp of favela vernacular--and the uncompromising brutality of the events he is describing--reveals the universe of the disenfranchised urban poor in a way that has never been seen before."

"[Paulo Lins] serves up a SCARFACE-like urban epic, bursting with encyclopedic, graphic descriptions of violence, punctuated with lyricism and longing."

Publisher's note

A powerful saga of the rise of the drug trade in the notorious slums of Rio de Janeiro spans three decades, recreating the turbulent times of the sixties that led to all-out street warfare, murder, and rampant drug trafficking by ruthless and brutal gangs, as seen through the eyes of two teenage boys. Original. 35,000 first printing.

Annotation

Built in the 1960s to provide homes for flood refuges, the City of God, a housing project outside of Rio de Janeiro, has become one of the world's most notoriously crime-plagued urban areas, a place where children gun down children over drugs, money, gang ties, or sometimes for no reason at all. Paulo Lins grew up in the City of God and after years of extensive research wrote a sprawling crime epic about the bloody gang war that took place in 1982. Released in 1997, the novel, stuffed with brilliant vignettes, violent tendrils of narrative, and 350 vivid characters (almost all known by nicknames) quickly became a smash hit in Brazil, and led to the masterly 2002 film by Fernando Meirelles. After nearly a decade, the novel has been translated into English--a Herculean task considering the abundance of street slang and cultural references--and a whole new audience can experience the visceral and savage, yet occasionally joyous, life in the CITY OF GOD.
