Pelican Artist Snapshot:

Los Angeles-by-way-of-Chicago instrumental quartet Pelican pride themselves on being impossible to classify. While it might be easy to label them metal, their extended compositions explore too many moods and textures to be reduced to a single genre. Drawing equally from the deep, dark pool filled by Black Sabbath and the meditative post-rock coming out of Chicago, Pelican can be crushingly heavy or ethereal within the same song.

Review

Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The band's maturation has been a matter of winnowing -- finding the styles they do best, honing them rigorously, and chucking everything else."
Alternative Press (p.172) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "CITY OF ECHOES has a broader palette than its predecessors -- but mostly, it puts the 'metal' back in 'instrumetal'."
CMJ (p.41) - "On their fittingly titled CITY OF ECHOES, Chicago's beatific metal instrumentalists Pelican are at their most reflective, their most urbane."

Title Note

Pelican: Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, Larry Herweg, Bryan Herweg, Trevor de Brauw.

Eclectic metal instrumentalists Pelican presented their much anticipated third full-length, CITY OF ECHOES, in 2007. The Chicago-bred foursome is a perfect fit for their label home of Hydra Head Records, which is owned by Isis guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner. Brooklynite indie producer-at-large Andrew Schneider brings a much-needed, analog-flavored tonality to the set. The group's compositions continue in their familiar style of uplifting and aggressive themes (best evidenced in "Broken Spaceship-Parts Needed"). Album title track "City Of Echoes" borders on being downright poppy, while "Winds With Hands" stands out as a pensive, solo acoustic-guitar piece. Pelican sports their doomy side with "Dead Between The Walls" and invokes their penchant for prog with "Lost In The Headlights." CITY OF ECHOES should expand Pelican's already fanatical base, while pleasing long-time followers as well. This is metal for just about anyone.
